My Personal Testimony

My Mother tells me that when I was very young, she led me in a prayer that went something like this:

Lord Jesus, I ask you to come into my heart and forgive me for the things that I have done wrong. Jesus I want you to take control of my life. Thank you for dying on the cross to forgive me of my sins. By your grace I will live, as you want me to live. Thank you Jesus. Amen.

You see, even at that age I knew I had done wrong things-things that were not pleasing to God. I knew the truth from the Bible that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." I also knew the penalty for my sin was separation from God. I wanted to be with God when I died, I wanted to know Jesus. Jesus said that: "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son [Jesus], that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Though I was small, I believed in Jesus and trusted him with my life. That day I "passed from death unto life" and God forgave me as I claimed the blood of Jesus for my sins.

At that age I do not know if I knew exactly what Jesus had done for me, but I do know that He changed me. Not that I did not sin any more, I still got in trouble with my parents when I did something wrong. But God had taken care of the problem of my sin. No longer was I separated from Him—I had a relationship with Him. The Bible says "…as many as received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God…" (John 1:12) and as a Son of God, Jesus gave me the desire to please him. I learned that the Bible was God's word to mankind, and through it I learned how to please God. Not that pleasing God was something that I could do, but it was something that Jesus was able to do in me as I yielded my life to him.

Little by little Jesus has been helping me to yield every area after area of my life to His control. Even when I stray from Jesus His love is greater than my sin and He is faithful to draw me back to himself. I have gone through times of loneliness, times of fear, and times of sin, but Jesus has always been there for me: teaching me and guiding me in the way he wants me to go. Jesus promised in the Bible that He would never leave me or forsake me. He has been faithful to that promise since the day that I gave my life to Him.
