Where did sin and death come from?
Sin started back at the Garden of Eden with Adam and
Eve. They were in paradise but lost it all because they sinned against
God by doing the one thing he told them not to do. Adam and Eve would
have lived forever with God without pain or death had they not transgressed
God's holy command. Adam and Eve passed on there natural sin tendencies
to every one of their descendants today which is why we are all sinners
(See also The Problem of Sin) and we are all doomed to eternal judgement
(see also The Consequence of Sin). However this is not what God wanted!
After all he is not only a God of justice he is also a God of love.
What's so great about the love of God?
In
our study of the attributes of God we have covered how God's holiness
and justice must be satisfied. We have not, to this point said much
about the love of God.
Our problem was sin. This separated us from God and
although he loved us, he could not dismiss our sin. Because he loved
us He decided to pay the price to bridge the gulf between man and Himself.
He did this through his son Jesus Christ. God became man in the person
of Jesus and paid the price for our sins (death) when He died on the
cross nearly 2000 years ago.
Why did this work? Because the only thing that could
satisfy the holiness and righteousness of God other than our death was
a perfect sacrifice. Jesus led the perfect life here on earth, never
breaking one of the commandments of God. Yet he was crucified, died,
and was buried to take our place and become the perfect sacrifice for
all of mankind. On the third day he rose again-this proved he had conquered
death. He had become the perfect sacrifice for our sins. The wages of
sin was death. But God had paid the price!
